Denver, CO (August 29, 2004) -- Dakini Carpets announced today that it is now accepting orders directly from decorators, interior designers and general public for custom woven Tibetan carpets. The contemporary carpets are produced in Nepal by refugees from Tibet.

Dakini Carpet's prides themselves as one of the first ever internet-only based custom contemporary carpet business to import from Nepal.  The removal of large storage and display facilities, and the partnership with artists versus textile designers, allows substantial savings to be passed to the customer.

"The high cost of handmade Tibetan Carpets has developed over time from a small number of companies importing Tibetan carpets into the US.  While it is with great respect that these companies were able to pioneer the import of hand-woven Tibetan carpets into the US, expenses over time have grown quite high, particularly with the need for showrooms .  As a result of this expense Tibetan Carpets are now priced too high for the average homeowner to own.  The result is a decrease in production for the Tibetans, directly impacting their ability to grow in the modern world," states Melissa Koren, Principal, Dakini Carpets.  "Our objective is to support the advancement of the Tibetan community by providing a means for them to be more prosperous."

Dakini Carpet's will weave carpets of any design and any size. "We can provide our customers with a one-of-a-kind carpet for a small vestibule or a grand ballroom," states Ms. Koren,  "and we deliver carpets for a fraction of the cost designers and their clients would pay at traditional outlets, including retail stores and design centers. Because we provide carpets directly to professional interior decorators and the public,  the savings are substantial."

Tibetan carpets are noted for their thick pile, rich and vibrant colors, and durability.

Ms. Koren also said, "The families we work with in Nepal escaped Tibet more than 20 years ago and have established themselves as one of the leading producers of high-quality carpets in the country. Their carpets are in some of the finest homes in the United States and Europe.  We have had the pleasure of providing full tuition and housing to many of the members of the family we work with for attendance at US universities, in partnership with select US philanthropists.  All students have moved on to study advanced degrees within the US, are completely self sustaining their lives in the US and plan to use their skills to assist the Tibetan community world wide." 

Dakini Carpets hopes to set up a scholarship fund in the future for Tibetan students looking to study abroad with a desire to use their education to help bring improvement to the Tibetan community worldwide.

Carpet weaving is the major source of income for Tibetan refugees in Nepal.

Dakini Carpets does not support the practice of child labor in the production of their carpet designs.
